“This is the beginning of what is to come from me,” he remarked of the the R&B influenced effort that came with a vivid palette of searching choruses and delicate chords. The eight-track project premiered on Hypetrak and was a meld of R&B and Soul that marked Raheem’s down as one to watch in the years that would follow. It culminated in the release of his debut EP AWOL. In the years that have followed Raheem has steadily built his confidence and cultivated his sound in private, until 2014, when he was at last ready to unveil his talent to the world.

He spent vast sums of his student loan on music equipment: a few monitors, a soundcard and a mac book, the later of which he still pins as his most important investment to date. It was his first time living alone and he flourished in his own space, using the freedom as an opportunity to find himself as a man and a chance to finally get serious about his craft. Raheem took these influences with him to university, enrolling at the University of Bedfordshire to study Media Production. He would get his chance when the group naturally disbanded after school. He played his position but yearned for the well-rounded education that comes with the freedoms afforded to a solo artist. He picked up plenty of useful habits but the claustrophobic nature of a group didn’t afford him the space to grow as an artist.

Life in ‘Adept’ was a valuable learning curve for a young Raheem.

At school Grime was just taking off and scores of his friends thought themselves the next Wiley or Kano, engaging in spirited freestyle sessions at lunch time.Īway from the classroom, he remembers the popularity of bashment and reggae on the radio in a time when the wider tastes of the British public was frequently reflected in the charts. His eldest sibling was a champion of traditional Hip Hop and the boom bap sound made famous by the likes of KRS One and Run D.M.C. One of five brothers, Raheem naturally took influence from his siblings. More than a decade later he is still at it and his debut EP AWOL, released in mid-2014, cemented his status as one of the city’s most promising vocal talents. The wide-eyed pack would gather in Raheem’s house three times a week to practice with hopes of one day making it big and so Raheem’s affection for music was born. Together the foursome became Adept, a soulful R&B group who took inspiration from Jagged Edge, Boys II Men and Ginuwine. It was in his new school and surroundings that the singer-songwriter first met friends Bluey Robinson (former RCA artist), Andre and Francis. In the middle of the noughties the Bakaré family packed up their possessions, sold their Hoxton home and moved across the Thames to Greenwich, South East London.
